Snake River Colorado

Snake River in the Colorado Mountains. From original painting I created in 1998. Acrylic on paper. Near Keystone Ski resort. Original is with my brother in Colorado but, I am making prints available through this web site.

Description (objective): The palette is dominated by cool greens, soft aquas and muted neutrals; brushwork alternates between soft blends for sky and water and more textured marks for foliage. The painting’s universal theme, soothing palette, and readable composition make it easy to place in homes, businesses, and hospitality settings.

Analysis (how the formal elements work): The work relies on value and color temperature to create depth — darker greens push the tree line back against a pale sky while cooler blues in the water recede into the picture plane. Textural contrast (smooth water versus stippled foliage) gives tactile interest and helps separate planes. Edges are intentionally soft in places, creating atmosphere and a sense of quiet.

Interpretation (meaning, mood): The painting reads as a contemplative landscape — a pause in time. The soft treatment and restrained detail invite the viewer to slow down rather than examine specifics, suggesting memory, solitude, or a restorative natural moment.

Judgment (evaluation): The piece achieves its aim of calmness very effectively. Compositionally it’s solid and broadly accessible.
